DEADMAN has been invited to showcase at the South By Southwest Music Festival in March. DEADMAN will appear at Opal Divine's Freehouse on Wednesday, March 12th at 11:00. The band will be sharing the stage with friends The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash that evening. Visit the SXSW Website for further details. News from New York: 1/28/03: The February 6th campfire show at the Texas Music Theater in Waxahachie was cancelled due to bad weather. The show has been rescheduled for April 10th and will be broadcast online and radio at that time as planned. Stay tuned for more details.. Thanks to all who came to the live recording at Club Dada (January 16th). You made the show a huge success. The band will be mixing the performance and working on additional material for release at Ramble Creek (Austin) and El Corazon (Dallas) studios throughout February and March. We anticipate an April release for the record. 12/28/02: Deadman is gearing up for a Live Recording January 16th at Club DaDa. A record will be released shortly after the performance, in early March. The record will contain live versions of songs from both "Paramour" and "Cuatro Canciones" as well as new songs the band has been working on. Everyone come out to the show and be involved! "I'm not a huge fan of Live CDs, but I think in our case we are interested in capturing the songs in a live format in order to have something that represents the sound of the band live. When we go in to make a record, we usually focus on that and then we spend the rest of the time interpreting the songs for the live performance. People always want to know what kind of band we are; are you a country band? Are you a rock band? Are you a folk band? And that idea is so bothersome. We're all if those I guess. People love to categorize things - it makes it easier to digest. But we're not interested in categorization. It is so limiting. No one ever invented anything new or innovative worrying about what category it would fit in. So the idea of doing the live CD is to serve as a record of what we do in a live setting." - Steven Collins Other News: The Astronaut Suit: further info: www.astronautsuit.com 11/1/02: Deadman is currently working on new material and will be in and out of the studio working on sonic ideas. We plan to have sketches and outtakes here on deadmanonline.com when they are available. The group has posted a new out-take from a recent session. The track is called "Snow" that was done a couple of weeks back: As popular music has aged, it's audience has become smarter and more cynical. And in a lot of ways we, the artists, have become more cynical. But we're wanting to beat that cynicism, while knowing that there is nothing new out there in the world. While everyone is searching for the "new sound" they loose the idea that the new sound will mean nothing emotionally if it has nothing behind it. Sometimes that's the point. But knowing that, the effect of one human being communicating to another is very worthwhile and that's idea behind a lot of these songs that we're starting to play. It's the idea that one person can stir another, comfort another, listen to another, and in the end better each other." - Steven Collins 9/27/02:
The group will be taking some time this fall to work up new songs in preperation for a future record. The video for Three Murders will be running in all Gadzook's stores across the United States this December. STREET TEAM - Get Directly Involved with Deadman! 8/21/02: Gadzooks! Deadmanonline.com will be opening a storefront soon and is currently working to finalize the inventory, which will include: shirts, posters, stickers, CDs, and more. Coming to your town.. Having trouble finding records? New MP3 7/21/02: Production Notes: When we were asked what song we wanted to do a "Music Video" for, it was a hard decision. Michael Duwe met me for a lunch at Kathleen's Art Cafe to talk about what we wanted to do visually as well as what song we wanted to do. When your independent like us, you've got to take a look at the reasons to even make a music video, the chances of it being seen through the traditional channels are remote. MTV and VH1 don't really play music videos anymore and the other channels that do have a waiting lists of top-money artists that have lined the pockets of the program directors before the videos are made. But in saying that, I could make the same argument for even making a CD in today's musical climate. So we said - yes let's do one - let's see what turns out of it. We chose "Three Murders" for several reasons. I had come up with a lose concept for a "visual" to this song because of the way It was written. I remember having a definite vision in my head of what the place looked like and sort of driving through the whole song as a passerby, a voyeuristic way of writing I suppose. Michael took that very loose sketch and made it a reality. We went to scout locations and found a place that looked similar to the border. The theme of "Three Murders" was powerful enough to do a video about. The song deals with the continuing disappearances of young girls in Juarez and how no one really cares - they're forgotten about - especially in the U.S. So we wanted to show that without being too preachy. Our job as musicians is to communicate and to share with people things, feelings and subjects that move and interest us. This subject was one of conscience. We hope it can be used in someway to promote awareness. Also, the scenario was the most simple thing to shoot. Both Michael and the band wanted to make something that harkened back to music and making music the feature of the video again. So many music videos have become so "huge" that they forget they are there to represent the song. So we made that decision based on how to best represent the song with a limited budget. The only prop was the car and that was one I had in mind when I actually wrote the song. It's an Oldsmobile 1972 cutlass supreme. I used to ride around in it with my sister when I was a kid. We'd ride around Galveston and listen to music and so the car sort of represented to me, a personal relationship with music and the freedom that driving gives . Duwe wanted to make it feel spooky without getting graphic and have the calm and cool of the southwest. Michael Gibson did a great job capturing images to film and Michael for creating the tone and Scott for a great and tireless edit. The final cut looks like a dreamland in between night and day - a no-mans-land, or for our purposes, a land of the "dead." And hopefully somewhere on the drive we'll find a destination. It was fun to make, a lot of work went in to this and we made a lot of friends. I think it turned out really great and we're proud to share it with you. Maybe one day, some other folks can see it out there too. So thank you Duwe, Michael G, Scott, and all the others who worked on this. - Steven Collins | July, 2002 6/21/02: A big thank you to Robin Hilton of NPR for selecting "Ghost Story" for the series, All Songs Considered. The video for "Three Murders" is in the process of being edited. We will feature it here on Deadmanonline when it is finished. Several questions have been asked about "Three Murders" and what it is about: "Here, literally a stone's throw from American prosperity, where the lights of El Paso wink down from the Texas side of the Rio Grande, a brand of pain and suffering thrives. This Mexico border city of 1.5 million people is a world of poverty and death, human injustice and lost hope. And it is this environment that drives the 66-year-old Chavez through 14-hour days focused on gaining new recognition for the rights of the downtrodden, seeking justice for the hundreds of young women who continue to travel here in search of the $4-a-day dream the maquiladora assembly lines promise, only to wind up dead and discarded in the isolated canyons of the nearby Chihuahua Desert," says Carlton Stowers of The Dallas Observer. Stowers covered the story in detail in his article "The Angel of Jaurez." Recently, the US has seen trends of the same problem in Texas, along Interstate 45, in-between Houston and Galveston. Through the 80's and 90's have been a string of unsolved murders involving young girls all found along Interstate 45. These killings have been called "The I-45 Killings." Each case is being investigated - but many remain unsolved. Information: Casa-Amiga, The Angel of Juarez, The I-45 Killings Deadman has been nominated for "Best Country & Western" act in the 2002 Dallas Music Awards (<- cast your vote). The band was glad to hear they had been nominated but all a bit confused to learn that they were "country and western." A press and a photo gallery section have been added to this site. "The Paramour" is on one of the highest points in Los Angeles, the estate spreads across more than four acres, overlooking the hills and canyons which surround it and the skyline of Los Angeles below. The mansion boasts a 360 degree view, 4 1/2 acres of terraced gardens, 22 rooms and a white marble lined swimming pool. The band recorded the songs live and added overdubs. A Total of 13 Tracks were recorded with 12 going on the record. "We got a really good recording of what we sound like as a group. Mark worked with us to establish the best collection of songs that best represented the band at this stage. Everyone involved is pleased with the results." - Steven Collins "I don't really have a favorite track, every song stands on it's own. Everything on the record has a sense of familiarity about it which is really nice because these songs are brand new." - Mark Howard. The band recut new versions of "Rosa Marie" and "Lonely Times" for the album. "Those songs kind of stood out so we did completely new versions of them. Mark kept handing Scully different things to hit the snare drum with. I think Rosa Marie was actually cut with Scully playing a straight Indian tambourine on the snare drum. Then he took this fuzz pedal to Britton's bass and just gritted it up, and this arrangement really worked.. . . We tried taking the songs in a different direction than they had been done before, and we found new ground with them. So if you have our EP you'll be pleasantly surprised by these new versions of the songs, because they are totally different." - Steven Collins Art work is being completed for the new record which the band anticipates to release in late May. 3/14/01: DEADMAN heads out to Los Angeles this week to work with Producer, Mark Howard (U2, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Daniel Lanois) on a full length record.
